The French Connection - Blu-Ray Review
The ruthless professionalism and headlong pace of The French Connection are still as gripping today as they were in 1970. Director William Friedkin could definitely claim stylistic paternity for all the cop movies of the '70s - including the original NYPD Blue, Serpico and The Taking Of Pelham One Two Three - but this is the film that really changed the game. Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider are utterly convincing as New York City cops Doyle and Russo as they chase down drug traffickers (and their corrupt boss) Alain Charnier and his henchmen.
The film's real strength is its refusal to resort to moralising or preaching - it's simply a thrilling story of gangsters and cops. The climactic car chase through Brooklyn is brilliantly executed - and the movie's refusal to show the drug dealers in any detail gives it a real edge over more moralising crime thrillers.
This new Blu-ray version features a The french connection tina remastered transfer with extras spread across two discs. The first features a commentary with Friedkin and interviews with Hackman and Scheider, while the second has a long list of HD featurettes. The Anatomy of a Chase sees Friedkin and producer D'Antoni return to Brooklyn and retrace the famous car chase scene, with Hackman riding part of the way in the correct model Pontiac. In Hackman on Doyle we have a new interview with the Oscar-winning star as he remembers his time on the case and working with director Friedkin.
Another new feature is a look at composer Don Ellis's career, with the composer discussing his work on the movie and presenting rare outtakes. Despite his modest background, Ellis was at the cutting edge of jazz composition in the '60s and '70s. He used experimental harmonies, time signatures and instrumentations and was well ahead of his contemporaries. He was also a major influence on later movie scores, including those of Jerry Goldsmith and Lalo Schifrin.
As for the supplementary features, there's a great deal of interest here. Those not familiar with the French Connection will be impressed by how it changed the face of cop films while those who are will relish seeing this classic remastered and enriched with a wealth of extras.
